Oh, let me take you back to the “good old’ days” when I had just adopted my first love, Jack.
Picture this: a younger, slightly less pet-savvy Anna Wills, buzzing with excitement and holding a leash attached to Jack.
Ah, that dog was a bundle of joy and energy, but also, let’s be real, a bit of a handful. Haha!
So, there I was, strolling down the aisles of the pet store, my eyes scanning the colorful shelves.
“Ah, a muzzle,” I thought. “That’s what we need!” I had been reading all these books and articles about dog training, but let’s just say I hadn’t quite reached my “certified expert” status yet.
I was just a dog mom, madly in love with her fur baby, trying to figure things out.
I picked up a muzzle that looked like it could fit a small horse and thought, “Hmm, Jack’s got a big head; this should do.” Spoiler alert: I was wrong. So, so wrong.
We got home, and the comedy show began.
I approached Jack with the muzzle, and he looked at me like, “Mom, what’s this new toy?” Oh, if only he knew.
I tried slipping it on him, and instantly, I knew I messed up.
The thing was so huge; it could’ve easily fit around his head twice.
Jack shook his head and the muzzle just flopped around, eventually sliding off like a sock on a slippery floor.
“Okay, take two,” I told myself, tightening the straps as much as they would go.
But no luck. Jack could literally eat treats, bark, and probably even solve a Rubik’s Cube with that thing on.
It was a disaster!
And here’s the kicker. We decided to go for a walk, thinking, “How bad could it be?” Famous last words, right?
Jack saw a squirrel and lunged for it.
The muzzle slipped right off, and there he was, barking his head off, causing a scene, and me?
I was the flustered dog mom, red as a tomato, struggling to regain control.
You see, a muzzle isn’t just a piece of equipment; it’s a safety device, both for your dog and for others.
Get the wrong size, and you’re basically inviting chaos into your life.
You wouldn’t wear shoes that don’t fit, right?
The same logic applies to our fur babies. The wrong size can lead to discomfort, escape-artist antics, and potentially risky situations.
Fast forward to today, and after years of volunteering, attending webinars, and basically becoming the dog guru I am now, I can tell you: that the right fit is crucial.
Measurements aren’t just numbers; they’re your ticket to a safer, happier life with your pet. So, the next time you’re shopping for a muzzle or even a simple collar, remember my hilarious yet cautionary tale with Jack.
Get out that measuring tape and get it right, folks!
Ah, the things we learn from our first loves.
YES! Once you do the first thing never forget to make sure you know How to Put on a Dog Muzzle.
I still miss Jack, but his legacy lives on every time I properly fit Max and Daisy with their collars, harnesses, or anything else.
Haha, we’ve come a long way, haven’t we? 😄
Do share your story I would love to read it.
